Following the pertussis epidemic announcement, we have seen a large increase in requests for pertussis PCR testing which is stretching local testing capacity. As per recently released national testing guidelines and after discussion with local Public Health, PCR testing indications in our region have changed to allow us to focus testing on priority groups. Requests for pertussis PCR must meet the following criteria to be processed:
- Respiratory symptoms compatible with pertussis
AND
- Less than 3 weeks since onset of cough (test lacks sensitivity after 3 weeks of cough)
AND any one of the following criteria:
- Less than 5 years of age
- Pregnant and in the third trimester
- Immunocompromised or chronic respiratory condition
- In regular contact (e.g. lives/works) with children aged less than 12 months,
- In regular contact (e.g. lives/works) with those who are pregnant
- In regular contact (e.g. lives/works) with those who are immunocompromised
- Specific request from the Medical Officer of Health
Further information regarding pertussis and testing is available on HealthPathways and the on-call microbiologist can be contacted if specific advice is required.
